Should I print the canopy, the valance, or both? +

Start with the valance. It hangs vertically at the eye level of everyone walking past, presents the same message in all four directions, and stays visible to people sitting underneath, which is the audience that matters most on a patio. Canopy panels are worth printing when the umbrella is seen from above or far off, such as a terrace overlooked by offices. Most hospitality orders are valance only.

Water bag or metal base? +

Ask whether the umbrella moves. If it goes out on Saturday mornings and comes home, the Round Water Bag is right: fill it from a tap on site, empty it before loading, and carry no dead weight. If it lives on the same patio all season, buy the Round Metal Base. It resists gusts more steadily and needs no refilling. For the 9.8ft canopies, lean towards metal.

What do I do when the wind gets up? +

Close it. This is the simplest rule in outdoor branding and the most often ignored, usually because the umbrella belongs to nobody in particular during a busy service. An open canopy in a gust either goes over with a table or inverts and strains the ribs. Assign the job to someone by name each shift. On an exposed patio, choose the iron frame version and a metal base.

Can it stay open in the rain? +

For light rain, yes, and that is often the point, since a covered table keeps earning through a grey afternoon. Two cautions. Water pools in the pockets between ribs if the umbrella is not opened fully, so crank it right out and let the fabric hold its slope. And rain rarely arrives without wind, so gusting means closing. Never strap a soaking canopy shut for days.

How much will the print fade over one summer? +

Less than you would fear. Dye-sublimation puts colour inside the fibre so it cannot peel or flake, and an umbrella that goes up in spring and comes in for winter gets far gentler total exposure than the same product in a year-round climate. After two or three seasons you may see intensity soften in bright reds and oranges on the sun-facing side.

How do I clean a canopy after a summer over a patio table? +

The polyester canopy is machine washable, so do it properly once a season rather than spot-cleaning forever. Take it off the frame, shake the debris out, then wash cool and gentle with a mild detergent, no bleach, no fabric softener and no hot dryer. Deal with bird droppings and tree sap while they are fresh. Wipe the ribs and pole at the same time.

How should I store umbrellas over winter? +

Indoors, dry, and never damp. Wash the canopy at the end of the season, dry it fully in air, and store it loosely rolled rather than cinched tight around the pole, because hard creases set into the fabric. Drain water bags before the first frost, since water freezes, expands and splits a seam. Bring metal bases in, or at least off wet ground.

How is a patio umbrella different from a canopy tent for outdoor events? +

Different jobs. A canopy tent is a stall: a rigid 10x10, 10x15 or 10x20 frame with a printed roof, walls if you want them, and covered space to serve customers and keep stock dry all day. A patio umbrella covers a table and the people at it, sets up in a minute, and carries branding on a valance at eye level.
