Frequently Asked Questions

There are thirteen fabrics here. How do I know which one I need? +
Work backwards from where the graphic hangs and what is behind it. For a standard indoor trade show backdrop, TrueKolor eco-friendly polyester covers most needs and is the default for good reason. If light will come through from behind, or anything is printed on the reverse, you need a blockout. If the banner goes outdoors on a truss or scaffold where wind is a factor, airmesh lets air pass through instead of fighting it. Felt and flannel suit soft signage and photography rather than exhibitions. Tell us the venue and the position and we will narrow it to one or two.
What does dye sublimation actually do differently? +
The ink turns to gas and bonds into the polyester fibres rather than sitting on the surface as a layer. Practically, that means the print cannot crack, peel or flake along a fold, which is exactly what happens to solvent-printed vinyl after a few shows. It is why these banners can be folded into a case rather than rolled on a tube, washed when they pick up marks, and creased repeatedly without the artwork degrading. The colour is in the cloth, so the cloth is what wears out, not the image.
When do I actually need blockout fabric? +
Whenever light or another image can come through. Three common situations: a banner hung in front of a window or a lit wall, where backlighting washes out your colours; a double-sided banner, where the reverse print ghosts through and both sides look muddy; and a hanging sign visible from both directions. The Duplex Blockout at 300 GSM is the heavier option for full opacity, and standard blockout handles most indoor cases. If the banner sits flat against a solid wall, blockout is money you do not need to spend.
Do Canadian venues require flame-retardant certification? +
Many do, and it is the compliance point that catches exhibitors out most often. Convention centres across Canada commonly require documentation that display fabrics meet a recognised flame spread standard, and enforcement varies from a form at booking to a floor inspection during move-in. Requirements differ by venue and by province, so check your exhibitor manual rather than assuming. Ask us for the documentation on your specific fabric before you order, because sourcing a certificate after the banner is printed and the show has started is not a position you want to be in.
Are sizes in feet or metres, and does that matter for artwork? +
Product listings run in feet and inches, which is standard across the exhibition industry in Canada even though metric is the official system. Where it causes real problems is artwork briefed to a designer in metres and produced to a slightly different size than the frame, since the difference is small enough to pass a glance and large enough to leave a gap or crop a logo. Work from the exact dimensions we confirm in writing for your product, in whichever unit you prefer, and have your designer build to that figure rather than converting.
Can you print French or bilingual artwork for events in Quebec? +
Yes, and there are two practical things to get right. Accented characters need fonts properly outlined before you supply the file, or they can drop out or substitute in production, and that failure is easy to miss in a proof if nobody reviewing it reads French. Second, French text typically runs longer than the English equivalent, so a layout designed to English copy often overflows once translated. Send both language versions at the same time and we will lay them out together rather than fitting the second one into space designed for the first.
Which fabrics hold up for outdoor use in Canadian conditions? +
Airmesh is the one built for it, because the perforations let wind through rather than turning the banner into a sail, which matters on scaffolding and truss installations more than most people expect. The 600D polyester is the heavier-duty choice for sustained outdoor exposure. What no fabric handles well is prolonged direct sun over a full season, or being left up through freeze-thaw cycles with moisture in the weave. For a multi-month outdoor installation, plan on replacement rather than assuming one banner covers the year.
How do I supply artwork, and what help do you provide? +
Supply AI, PSD or high resolution PDF at 150 DPI minimum at full size, in CMYK, with fonts outlined and bleed as specified for your product. Design to the printable dimensions we confirm rather than the nominal size. Free artwork assistance and a complimentary 2D mockup are included on every order, so you can see the layout on the actual product before it goes to print. Send your files and measurements to support@backdropsource.ca or call +1 (867) 675-0399 and we will check the setup before anything is produced.
